An antique pair of silver salt and pepper shakers (830S, 83% fineness) from Norway, measuring 62 mm high, 24 mm wide and 12 mm deep and weighing 33 g in good condition.
Description from the seller
Antique pair of salt and pepper shakers in silver – Scandinavian origin
This is a decorative pair of antique salt and pepper shakers in silver, executed in a highly elaborate form with floral and ornamental decoration. The two shakers are worked as a unified pair and each has a cylindrical body with a slightly curved upper edge. One of the lids is fitted with fine perforations for dispensing, while the second is designed as a counterpart.
Particularly striking are the artistically sweeping supports. They are richly decorated with floral and scroll ornaments and give the small vessels a distinctly regal character. The walls also show decorative relief or engraving motifs, which give the pair an elegant effect typical of older silverware for the table.
Material and hallmarks
On the underside there are several stamps. In particular, the 830S mark is clearly visible, indicating a silver content of 830/1000, i.e., 83% fine silver. The other marks are, in photos, sometimes difficult to identify clearly. The combination of 830S with the additional subsidiary/manufacturer marks fits very well in the realm of older Scandinavian silver works.
The 830S mark is especially common in Scandinavian silver, with Norway playing a particularly important role. The design and the hallmarks thus point to Scandinavian origin, possibly Norway.
Stylistically, the shakers fit into the late 19th to early 20th-century tradition. The elaborate floral design, the curved feet, and the overall regal execution are typical of high-quality decorative table silver from that period.
Special features:
* Pair of salt and pepper shakers
* genuine silver, 830/1000
* hallmark 830S
* in addition, further maker/control marks
* elaborate floral ornamented surface
* decorative, curved feet
* beautiful historical collectible item
* probably Scandinavian origin
