Original 1687 copperplate map of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, titled PROVINCES-UNIES DES PAYS-BAS, by Sanson–Jaillot, non-coloured, 64 × 94 cm, Atlas Nouveau.
Description from the seller
An extraordinary and imposing original geographical map of the Netherlands, copper-engraved in 1687. The work stems from the cartographic genius of Sanson (Geographer Ordinary to the King) and was magnificently published and issued in Paris by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1649–1712), one of the leading French publishers of the Grand Siècle.
The map offers a monumental and highly detailed geopolitical reconstruction of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces and its territorial acquisitions in Flanders, Brabant, Limburg, and the territory of Liège. The exemplar is characterized by a splendid contemporaneous coloring of the borders that precisely delineates the various provinces and historic jurisdictions of the era.
On the left side dominates a sumptuous and large cartouche in full Baroque style, richly adorned with allegorical figures, putti and heraldic shields, containing the official dedication to "Monseigneur le Dauphin" (the Dauphin of France). Immediately beneath the cartouche one can appreciate a finely rendered marine scene with ships of the era engaged in a battle or navigation in the Ocean d'Allemagne.
An exhibition piece of exceptional historical importance and rarity, ideal for embellishing the most demanding collections of 17th-century antique cartography.
Dimensions 64 x 94 cm
