Original copper-engraved map of the Flanders region by Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720), titled LA FLANDRE ESPAGNOLE, et LA FLANDRE HOLLANDOISE. Avec les Nouvelles LIGNES, with hand-coloured contemporary borders, size 26 × 41 cm, illustrating the Spanish and Dutch Flanders as part of Atlas Curieux.
Description from the seller
Important and fascinating original geographic map of the Flanders region, copper-engraved in 1705 by the renowned royal cartographer Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720). The work, marked with the number 4 in the upper right corner, comes from the fortunate and celebrated editorial project Atlas Curieux published in Paris.
The chart documents with exceptional precision the complex geopolitical and defensive situation of the area during the military campaigns of the War of the Spanish Succession. It highlights the historic fortifications and defensive lines of the area ("Avec les Nouvelles Lignes"), coloring the territory between the Spanish Netherlands and the Dutch Flanders with a splendid contemporaneous coloring of the borders. In the upper left is a sober rectangular cartouche containing the full title, the author's qualifications as geographer to the Dauphin of France, and the royal privilege. In the upper right there is a scale expressed in "cinq heures de chemin" (five hours of travel).
A rare specimen, of great interest for European military history as well as for the high decorative value of early 18th-century cartography.
Dimensions 26 x 41 cm
