Relief, Pair of relief panels - 52 cm - Wood

Pair of carved and polychromed wooden Renaissance relief panels depicting apostles, 16th century, European.

The two panels each show a standing male figure, likely apostles, placed within shallow architectural niches beneath shell-shaped canopies. Both figures stand on small consoles and are dressed in long robes with stylised drapery. One figure holds an open book, likely referring to the Gospel and possibly depicting St. Paul, while the attribute of the other figure is no longer clearly identifiable due to wear, but could be a key. If so St. Paul and St. Peter would be the figures depicted. The green backgrounds are decorated with gilt foliate motifs.

Carved in wood with polychromy and gilding.

Condition: in worn condition with losses to polychromy and gilding, surface abrasion and small damages. Visible vertical joins and minor restorations.

Dimensions: each panel approx. 52 x 24.5 cm.
