Description from the seller
Important and detailed double-page geographical and military map, copper-engraved dating between the 17th and 18th centuries by the celebrated royal geographer Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720). The plate, marked with the number 13 in the upper right corner, belongs to his famous work L'Atlas Curieux ou Le Monde représenté dans des cartes générales et particulières, published in Paris at l'Isle del Palace.
The map describes with extraordinary topographic richness an area of fundamental strategic and military importance located along the Meuse valley, a region historically contested and fortified. The map focuses on the towns and nerve fortresses of Dinant, Philippeville and the fortress of Charlemont (near Givet), extending to the surrounding natural region of Condroz. The representation includes with extreme precision the mountainous reliefs, the dense forests of the Ardennes, the intricate hydrographic network and the dense presence of villages and fortified castles.
In the lower right corner stands an elegant Baroque cartouche in the shape of a carved stele, containing the full descriptive title, indications about the author as geographer to the Dauphin of France, and the graphical scales expressed in leagues.
An example double-page printed on period paper, characterized by sharp ink and great historical charm, perfect for collectors of antique cartography of Northern Europe and military architecture.
Dimensions 26 x 64 cm
