Extraordinary vintage mushroom lamp / ball lamp / Space Age table lamp – 1970s
Very special original vintage table lamp from the 1970s with a wonderfully typifying Space Age design and an exceptionally beautiful light effect.
The robust red, multi-profiled lamp base is made of ceramic. Stylistically it recalls designs or productions by Steuler or Dümler & Breiden; I would not want to claim a definite manufacturer. The base is marked with “GERMANY” and “550/10”.
Especially appealing is the large, almost spherical shade, which gives the lamp its characteristic appearance of a mushroom lamp. It is not glass, but a shape-stable shade made from a finely textured, textile-like material on a solid carrier, probably cellulose-based. The surface has a very fine woven- or knit-like texture.
This materiality makes the lamp extraordinary when lit: the light is very softly and evenly diffused and takes on a beautiful warm beige to yellow tone.
