Description from the seller

• Short ntsoko sword

• Ethnicity: Saka/Ngandu

• Democratic Republic of the Congo

• Total length: 49.5 cm

• Period: early 20th century

• Materials: wrought iron, wood, copper plates and red copper wire

• Weight: 411 g

• Provenance: ex collection Peter Westerdijk, Utrecht, Netherlands

— The ntsoko short sword comes from the northeast of the Mongo world: the Ngandu, the Saka, the Lalia and the Kuru. The smiths of this Mongo complex produced a wide variety of leaf-shaped knives and this specimen resembles more a spear point. Used mainly as prestige weapons, they could also serve in combat. Peter Westerdijk states that these knives “were in the possession of every adult man among the Saka and their neighbors” (Jan Elsen, "De Fer et De fierté" - 2003; Peter Westerdijk, "African Metal Implants" - 1984).

— A very beautiful classic ntsoko short sword from the North Congo, in perfect condition and from the collection of Mr. Peter Westerdijk, one of the world’s leading collectors of African tribal weapons and author of several books on the subject. (see Wikipedia and the last 2 photographs)

— Careful, insured delivery with tracking number. (Bpost)
