Description from the seller
Title: Magnificent Antique Victorian Graphoscope & Stereoscope – London Stereoscopic Company (ca. 1865–1875)
Bring the early history of photography into your home with this breathtaking, original Victorian graphoscope/stereoscope. This high-end optical instrument was manufactured by the world-famous London Stereoscopic Company and features the authentic ivory/celluloid ? label with the prestigious addresses 108 & 110 Regent St. Thanks to this address inscription, the device can be dated precisely to between approximately 1865 and 1875.
This gem served in the late 19th century as the ultimate entertainment in the salons of the well-to-do middle class. The device combines two functions:
1. Graphoscope: Fold up the large, impressive magnifying lens to study cabinet photographs, picture cards, or fine engravings in exquisite detail.
2. Stereoscope: for viewing the well-known double stereographs, which gives a magical 3D effect.
The object is made of warm quality wood (likely mahogany or walnut) with gorgeous woodcarving on the adjustable card holder. The sliding and tilting mechanisms in brass operate smoothly, and the large lens is clear. It includes the shown antique landscape card so you can enjoy it immediately.
A rare and highly decorative collectible for lovers of antique photography, optics, or fine Victorian antiquities!
Specifications:
• Manufacturer: The London Stereoscopic Company
• Period: Circa 1865–1875
• Material: Mahogany/Walnut wood, brass elements
• Condition: In very nice antique condition with a beautiful patina and minimal, age-appropriate signs of use (the bottom plate is partly worn from dust). The part where the photo is placed can be rotated. It slides through the gap by means of a small wooden bar. It all works perfectly. In time, the screw should be replaced, but this is a small matter.
This is an extremely rare graphoscope that you rarely encounter in this condition.
