Description from the seller
A special and authentic piece of European coffee history. This antique hand coffee roaster probably dates from the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century, from a period when coffee at home was still roasted completely by hand.
Before electric coffee roasters and modern kitchen appliances became common, green coffee beans were roasted in a metal roaster like this above a heat source. With the hand crank the internal stirring mechanism was continuously moved, so the beans were turned evenly during roasting and did not burn. The semicircular flap made it possible to put the beans into the roaster and remove them again after roasting.
Thus this object is effectively an early precursor of the modern coffee roaster and a tangible piece of history of our daily cup of coffee.
The coffee roaster is made from dark patinated sheet iron, combined with wooden handles. The original crank, fill cap, and the internal stirring mechanism are present. The dark patinated metal exterior and the weathered wooden handles give this historical item its authentic, rustic appearance.
A special decorative eye-catcher for a classic or country kitchen, nostalgic kitchen corner, display cabinet or collection of historical kitchenware. Also very decorative in an industrial or eclectic kitchen, coffee corner or hospitality venue.
