Napoléon III era rectangular jewellery box in ebonised wood with Italian micromosaic and malachite cabochons, attributed to the Vatican Mosaic Studio, ca. 1850–1900, with a central micromosaic medallion of the Temple of Vespasian and Titus and bronze-gilt Neo-Gothic trim, dimensions 9 x 15.5 x 11.5 cm, in fairly good used condition with possible minor losses.
Description from the seller
Elegant and rare Napoléon III-era jewelry box (Second Empire, 19th century), rectangular in shape and made of ebonized wood. This object testifies to the taste of the era's upper middle class for prestige mementos linked to the Grand Tour. The centerpiece of this box is its superb central medallion in Italian glass filigree micro-mosaic, a typical work from Roman ateliers (like the renowned Vatican Mosaic Studio). It stylizes and finely depicts the ruins of an antique temple on the Roman Forum (the Temple of Vespasian and Titus), set in a turquoise-blue glass paste border imitating opaline. The lid and front are richly decorated with a gilded bronze pierced surround in a neo-Gothic style, enhanced by round malachite cabochons with strong veining, as well as pyramid-shaped corner cabochons in blue-and-white marbled glass paste. Attention: I do not own the key, and there are some flaws (see photo). A collectible and coveted item, you have the opportunity to bid on a unique piece. Happy bidding to all. Please look carefully at the photos which are part of the description. Any damage not mentioned in the text but visible in the photos is considered described. No shipping outside the EU; if you are outside the European Union you may bid on one of my lots, but no claims will be possible in case of problems during transport. Given the new import/export regulations to the USA, there will be no shipping to that country. Professional careful shipping, with signature and insurance.
