A Diodontidae specimen from France, dating to 1950, a fish taxidermy specimen with dimensions 17 cm high, 38 cm wide and 21 cm deep, weighing 330 g, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Vintage taxidermy of a diodon, also known as porcupinefish or spinyfish, France, 20th century
This intriguing specimen of a diodon, also known as porcupinefish, has a distinctive rounded form with protruding spines and a slightly open mouth. In the wild the fish inflates itself as a defense mechanism to deter predators with its impressive spiny skin.
On the underside the authentic opening is beautifully visible, testimony to the traditional artisanal drying and preparation process (such specimens were formerly also used as a unique lamp or rarity). The spiky skin and the well-preserved fins give the object a very striking and dynamic presence.
The taxidermy is in generally good condition with a characteristic patina that suits its age. Light signs of aging are visible on the fins and skin, but overall it is beautifully preserved.
A touch of mystery and maritime history for the devoted collector of curiosities seeking a special "eyecatcher" for the cabinet of curiosities!
