Grande croce processionale, made in brass (ottone dorato/ottone fuso) from Ethiopia, linked to Christian Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo tradition, measuring 42 cm high, 27 cm wide and 1 cm deep, weighing 900 g, in good condition with rare use and minor wear for age, featuring a central relief of Saint George on horseback and a conical hollow handle with a side window for attachment to a processional staff.
Description from the seller
Large processional cross in a cast and pierced brass/bronze alloy. Latin cross form with lozenge-shaped terminals, entirely openwork decorated with interlacing geometric motifs - the typical Coptic Eternal Knot.
In the center, a circular medallion with a relief figure applied depicting a Saint on horseback (Saint George slaying the dragon), an iconographic subject greatly venerated in the Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church.
Hollow conical handle, with a lateral fenestration that reveals a small relief figure of an angel, used for mounting on a wooden staff for liturgical processions.
A work of notable artisanal quality, with rich symbolism. Each side of the cross ends with minor crosses inscribed in diamonds, a symbol of the spread of Christianity in the four directions.
