Description from the seller
Set of 12 antique Portuguese azulejos – Art Nouveau / Art Deco – circa 1920
Special set of 12 antique Portuguese wall tiles (azulejos), dating from the early decades of the 20th century, probably around 1920.
The tiles feature an elegant, continuous floral motif in green/blue-green tones on a cream-white background. The design consists of graceful garlands, ribbons, flowers and curved ornaments, fitting within the Portuguese Arte Nova / Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and the transition to the Art Deco period.
What makes the design special is that four tiles together form one complete composition. When four tiles are placed in a square, a large round floral medallion with an open center emerges.
This lot consists of 12 tiles and therefore contains three four-tile compositions. Each composed composition measures approximately 30 × 30 cm.
