Description from the seller
This fine art print is a high-quality reproduction of “Nu couché (sur le côté gauche)” (1917) by Amedeo Modigliani, one of the most distinctive and influential figures of early 20th-century modern art.
Printed on premium 300gsm matte fine art paper, it offers a refined, glare-free finish with excellent tonal depth, warm color reproduction, and visual clarity. The A3 format (297 × 420 mm) enhances the elegance and expressive presence of the composition, making it ideal for sophisticated contemporary or classic interiors.
This is an “after” print, meaning a contemporary reproduction of the original artwork and not an original work by the artist. The image has been carefully digitally refined to improve sharpness, contrast, tonal balance, and overall color harmony, while preserving the atmosphere and distinctive character of Modigliani’s original painting.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
“Nu couché (sur le côté gauche)” was painted in 1917 and belongs to Modigliani’s celebrated series of reclining female nudes produced during his mature Paris period. Measuring approximately 89.5 × 146.7 cm in its original form, it is the largest painting of Modigliani’s career and is particularly remarkable for being the only one of his horizontal reclining nudes to present the entire female figure within the composition.
The model lies confidently across the canvas, her elongated body following a graceful sweeping curve from head to feet. Warm flesh tones dominate the composition and contrast against the deep red and dark surrounding fabrics, creating an intimate yet visually powerful atmosphere. The simplified anatomy, elongated proportions, flowing contours, and restrained modelling are characteristic of Modigliani’s instantly recognizable visual language.
Rather than presenting the nude through a mythological, historical, or allegorical narrative, Modigliani gives the figure a direct and self-assured presence. The resulting image combines sensuality with remarkable formal balance, transforming the human body into a rhythmic arrangement of curves, shapes, and warm tonal transitions.
The painting formed part of the extraordinary group of nudes that established Modigliani as one of the most radical interpreters of the human figure in modern art. When examples from this series were first exhibited in Paris in 1917, their uncompromising treatment of nudity caused considerable controversy. Today, these works are regarded as masterpieces of modern painting and among the most recognizable achievements of Modigliani’s career.
“Nu couché (sur le côté gauche)” has since become one of Modigliani’s most celebrated works, admired for its monumental composition, elegant simplicity, warm palette, and timeless sense of intimacy.
