Description from the seller

Up for auction is a classic, precious and fascinating vintage bellows-based medium-format camera: the Ensign No. 12 Carbine (in the rare "Tropical" variant with an entirely bronze finish), produced in Great Britain by Houghton-Butcher Mfg. Co. Ltd. in London in the early 1920s.

The lot is presented in good overall condition, with normal signs of use and storage consistent with the age and pre-war history of the item, and it is complete with its original optical block mounted on an extendable rail.

Optics: The camera mounts the outstanding and renowned original Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 1:4.5 f=12cm lens. The lenses show no deep scratches or traces of mold or internal fungi; only a normal, diffuse, light vintage patina is present due to the passing decades, entirely natural for a piece of this age, which does not compromise its historical depth and collectible charm.

Mechanical: The lot appears mechanically functional. The central mechanical shutter responds to manual controls, firing at the various speeds adjustable on the top dial. The front panel disengages correctly, and the system allows the extension of the bellows along the rails.

Aesthetics: Good overall condition, as documented by the photographs. The solid, robust metal housing, entirely made of bright bronze alloy, retains an exceptional visual impact, displaying a magnificent superficial historical patina.

Tracked international shipping, fully insured and with professional super-protective packaging to ensure maximum safety during transit.
