Description from the seller

Exceptional Art Nouveau Cobalt Blue Glass Vase with 1000/1000 Fine Silver Overlay – Jugendstil – Early 20th Century

An impressive and beautifully preserved example of early 20th-century European decorative art, combining the captivating depth of cobalt blue glass with an elaborate overlay of fine silver.

Standing an impressive 31 cm tall, this elegant vase is distinguished by its harmonious elongated silhouette and richly ornamented silver decoration, inspired by the flowing botanical forms of the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements.

It resembles the work of Friedrich Wilhelm Spahr, but the only hallmark I can find is "1000/1000".

The striking design features stylised flowers, elongated stems and finely detailed leaves, arranged in a continuous decorative pattern around the body. The brilliant silver contrasts beautifully with the deep translucent blue glass, creating an exceptional interplay of colour, light and reflection.

The decoration was executed using the sophisticated silver overlay technique, in which silver is deposited directly onto the glass surface through an electrochemical process. The decorative design is subsequently defined through the careful removal and finishing of selected areas, producing the intricate floral patterns visible throughout the vase.

The silver is marked 1000/1000, indicating fine silver of exceptionally high stated purity.

This specialised decorative technique became particularly associated with German and Central European workshops during the late Jugendstil and early Art Deco periods.

The vase is believed to date from the first decades of the 20th century, approximately 1910–1930. Although the maker has not been conclusively identified, its craftsmanship and decorative treatment are characteristic of the distinguished Central European silver-overlay tradition.

A substantial and highly decorative collector's piece, equally suited to an important Art Nouveau collection or as a striking centrepiece in a refined interior.
