Description from the seller
Monumental Tuncahuán urn measuring 75 cm – 5th century BC–5th century AD
A Tuncahuán terracotta urn with an imposing presence, measuring 75 cm in height. Its elongated ovoid body tapers towards a pointed base and extends into a tall neck with a widely flaring mouth. Reddish horizontal bands survive on the neck above broader painted strokes on the cream and ochre body. The piece is restored and exhibits joins, wear and some chips, together with colour variations and surface deposits. Its pronounced verticality and massive scale make it particularly striking. From the Pierre Pourrut collection. The long neck forms a substantial part of the vessel's height and opens out into a broad, thin-looking rim. Its painted bands emphasise this vertical division above the fuller lower body. The pointed base reinforces the elongated outline, making the vessel's profile as distinctive as its scale. The restored joins remain visible among the variations in surface colour, and the chips are not concealed in this account. The vessel combines a simple overall shape with surviving painted accents of strong visual effect.
Material: Terracotta
Dimensions: 75 cm high
Provenance: Pierre Pourrut collection.
