Grey stalactitic amethyst meteorite from the Mines of Las Catalanas, Uruguay, mounted on a black metal base, weight 1670 g, dimensions 172 × 127 × 106 mm.
Description from the seller
Grey Amethyst - Mines of Las Catalanas — This lot presents an extraordinary stalactitic formation of gray amethyst, a remarkably large specimen with a strong visual impact from Uruguay. The piece stands out for its complex morphology and for an unusual coloration that departs from the classic violet to embrace a range of grays and browns. Mounted on a custom-made black metal base, the mineral takes on the appearance of a natural sculpture, a true geological monument that captures attention and stirs curiosity. Direct observation reveals a structure that develops vertically from a fragment of the original basalt cavity. At the base one notes several botryoidal growths, like clusters, from which rises a main stalactite, flanked by smaller ones. The entire surface is coated with a fine druse of sparkling microcrystals, which give the piece a almost “sugar-like” texture and a diffuse luster. The color palette is particularly fascinating: the tones range from anthracite gray to pearl gray, interrupted by warm ochre and brown hues, evidence of the presence of iron oxide inclusions. The genesis of this specimen is a fascinating geological tale. It all begins inside a gas bubble trapped in basalt lava millions of years ago. Slowly, over geological eras, silica-rich hydrothermal fluids filtered into this cavity. Similar to how stalactites form in limestone caves, the dripping of these solutions gave rise to the central columnar structure. The surrounding botryoidal forms are the result of growth in successive layers in a saturated environment. The rare gray coloration is due to a unique combination of trace elements and mineral inclusions, such as hematite or goethite, crystallized together with quartz, making this piece a highly interesting variety of amethyst from a mineralogical standpoint. From a collecting perspective, this specimen represents a piece of great value. Its three-dimensionality, well-defined stalactitic morphology, and atypical coloration make it a precious addition to any mineral collection, especially for those specializing in quartz or in unusual geological formations. Beyond its scientific interest, the piece possesses strong aesthetic and decorative value. Its sculptural presence makes it a perfect Wunderkammer object or a focal point of great elegance in a design setting, a professional studio, or a library. The specimen is presented on a black metal pedestal, designed to support it securely and to allow a full 360-degree view. This stand, included in the lot, not only guarantees stability but enhances the verticality and the complex architecture of the mineral, turning it into a work of art created by nature. Every surface irregularity, every color variation, is not a flaw, but the indelible signature of the natural process that produced it, a tangible testament to the power and creativity of our planet."} }/})?
