Description from the seller
Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona – Pianrosso 2020
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG – Vigna Pianrosso
Lot of 3 bottles of 0.75 L – Harvest 2020
Pianrosso 2020 is the most representative Brunello from Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, a historic winery in Montalcino located in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate area, in the southeastern quadrant of the denomination. It is not the estate’s base Brunello: Pianrosso is a single-vineyard Brunello, produced exclusively in the best vintages through a selection of grapes from the named vineyard. The winery itself defines it as its most representative wine.
Vigna Pianrosso
The Pianrosso vineyard covers 11.69 hectares, at an altitude of roughly 240 to 360 meters above sea level. The soils are medium-textured, with a significant presence of Eocene-origin marls. From this vineyard Ciacci Piccolomini also selects the grapes destined, in the anticipated vintages, for the prestigious Brunello Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso Santa Caterina d’Oro.
The grape variety is:
100% Sangiovese
Vinification and aging
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and in glazed cement vats, with temperature control. It is followed by a long aging in large oak casks (botti) of from the traditional estate’s approach, and a further bottle-aging period. For Pianrosso 2020, several specialist notes report about 36 months in Slavonian oak, followed by bottle evolution.
Thus, it is a Brunello built for substantial evolution over time.
Characteristics of Pianrosso 2020
The color is ruby red with garnet tendencies.
The bouquet is intense and complex, with strawberry, raspberry and other ripe red berries, accompanied by floral and spicy notes. With aeration, hints of licorice, red orange, aromatic herbs and spices emerge.
On the palate it is full-bodied, warm and harmonious, with substantial yet velvety tannins, bright acidity and a marked sapid component. The finish is long, elegant and persistent.
The winery emphasizes in particular the great balance between tannin, acidity and sapidity and the high potential for further aging in the cellar.
A very awarded 2020
Pianrosso 2020 has received major acclaim from international critics, including:
98/100 – James Suckling
98/100 – Gardini Notes
95/100 – Falstaff
