AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1910 – Cristallerie Legras & Cie, Saint-Denis, France.

Magnificent and imposing Art Nouveau vase from the famous LEGRAS glassworks, blown glass with an elegant silhouette, resting on a wide flared base and widening into a refined hexagonal neck with a delicately animated opening.

This superb Belle Époque glassware is distinguished by its remarkable fully hand-painted and glazed rural decor, representing a charming and poetic pastoral scene bathed in the last golden glow of a setting sun.

On a luminous opal glass background with magnificent shades of lemon yellow, golden yellow, and orangey tones, unfolds a true little bucolic tableau, whose warm colors wonderfully contrast with the deep greens of the vegetation.

In the foreground, a majestic tree spreads its thick branches over a peaceful countryside. Its gnarled trunk, long twisting branches, and leaves delicately dotted with small touches of green enamel form a true vegetal lace through which the golden light of the sky filters.

At its feet, a path seems to wind between grasses and rocks, while the contours of a hill softly emerge in the background.

But it is at the heart of this verdant nature that the poetry of this charming pastoral scene is revealed.

A shepherdess, discreetly represented near the rocks, watches over her small flock of three sheep grazing peacefully on the tender grass, while her faithful dog stands by her side, attentive and protective.

The animals, delicately enhanced with pale cream and dark brown enamels, bring a touch of life and sweetness to this composition, evoking the calm of a countryside evening.

The enameling work is especially seductive: the foliage is executed with a multitude of tiny impressionist strokes, the trunks and rocks show subtle textural effects, while the tender greens, olive and moss blend harmoniously with the brown and golden hues of the landscape.

The scene unfolds generously all around the vase, inviting the eye to follow the contours of the terrain, the branches of the trees, and the reliefs of this peaceful countryside.

But one of the greatest beauties of this glassware lies in its extraordinary luminosity.

Under the light, the lemon-yellow background glows with magnificent golden reflections, while a soft orange halo seems to ignite the horizon. The foliage then stands out in green silhouettes, as if illuminated by the last rays of the sun.

This scene admirably illustrates François-Théodore Legras’s sensitivity to rural and forest landscapes, he who, deeply marked by his Vosges origins, made nature one of the main sources of inspiration for his glass creations.

More than a simple vase, it is a true painted landscape on glass, a poetic evocation of the countryside of old, where a shepherdess and her faithful companion watch over their small flock, in the shade of a large tree, in the golden light of twilight.

Signed “Leg” in the decor, for LEGRAS.

Beautiful height of about 28.5 cm with a lovely volume.

Rare signed piece, with a figurative pastoral scene decor, drawn from an illustrated and cataloged series in the famous reference work Legras, Master Glassmaker.

A magnificent Art Nouveau glassware, remarkable for the originality of its decor, the richness of its enamels, and the intensity of its luminous colors.

In very good condition for its great age,
(vase over 125 years old!) With pretty twilight color nuances making this magnificent LEGRAS collection piece from the very beginning of the 20th century a unique and rare piece that will surely beautify your interior and evoke admiration from your guests!

Under the base a pretty trace of the pontil from the blowing rod appears, cut with tongs, a moving testimony to the old manufacturing techniques and the remarkable artisanal know-how of the Saint-Denis glassmakers.

Very beautiful collectible piece from the Art Nouveau period of the Nancy school. Daum Nancy, Gallé, French glass, Schneider era...
