An authentic Kosmos student lamp with a side reservoir, dating to circa 1900–1910, made of heat‑resistant glass and yellow brass in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style.
Description from the seller
A very characteristic and fully authentic antique student lamp with an ingenious side reservoir. This historic design was widely used around the early 20th century to provide shadow-free light on work tables by placing the fuel reservoir to the side.
The construction is technically high-quality: at the bottom of the oil tank there is still the original brass valve pin of the internal valve mechanism. This provided an automatic, dosed fuel feed to the burner at the time.
The lamp is equipped with a classic Kosmos-type round burner (10-line sizing) with a richly perforated burner gallery for optimal draft.
Particular to this lot is the original, heat-resistant glass chimney. The glass bears a beautiful and clear factory mark etched on it, with a laurel wreath, an oil lamp, and the specific texts "CRISTAL PATENT", "MADE IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA", and the dimensioning "10'''". This places the glass’s origin exactly in the renowned glass centers of Bohemia shortly after the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918.
Condition and material:
The object is in a beautiful, well-worn antique state with a wonderful historic patina. The base of the lamp is made of yellow brass and still shows clear traces of the original silver-colored nickel plating. After decades of polishing, this nickel layer has been worn away in places over the years, allowing the underlying brass to glow warmly. This gives the lamp a fantastic two-tone character. The underside shows the authentic, old soldering finish of the base plate.
All mechanical parts and screw threads (including the reservoir’s ornamental cap) function as they should.
IMPORTANT: The lamp is supplied without a wick; this must be installed by the buyer if one wishes to burn the lamp. The lamp has therefore not been tested for operation.
The glass chimney is clear and solid. At the absolute outer edge there is a small, minimal chip (a flesh wound), appropriate to its age and use (see the detailed photos for an accurate impression).
The lamp is in original condition and has not been converted to electricity.
Note: The holder ring for a lampshade is present, allowing the lamp to be fitted with a glass shade (such as a green or white opaline shade) if desired.
Specifications:
• Height: 37.5 cm (total height including the glass chimney)
• Width: 23.5 cm (total width from burner to reservoir)
• Base diameter: 12.5 cm
• Weight: 1660 grams (1.66 kg)
• Packaging: The object will be packed with utmost care and professionalism. Loose parts (in particular the delicate cast-iron ring with the original wax candle and the extinguishing cap) are individually wrapped in thick bubble wrap to prevent shifting, scratching, or breaking during transport. The set is shipped in a sturdy, double-wall cardboard box with sufficient shock-absorbing filler.
All lots paid after November 19 will only be shipped after December 6 due to holidays. Thank you for your understanding.
