Description from the seller
From a private collection with legitimate provenance
Madonna with Child
Jesus (Salvator Mundi / Madonna del Globo iconography)
Period: Late 18th - 19th Century (19th century)
Origin: Tosco-Emilian Italy
Solid wood carved from a single trunk (monoblock)
Finish: Traces of ancient polychromy and contemporaneous gilding
Finish: Traces of ancient polychromy and contemporaneous gilding
Dimensions: Height approximately 80 cm
X 30 x 28
Conditions: Structurally sound, in generally good condition for its age. Shows signs of wear, widespread losses and paint film detachment exposing the wood grain, lending a charming antique patina. Natural cracks from wood shrinkage on the back and base, typical of pieces carved from a single trunk. The Virgin's right hand features a visible dowel/joint, probably originally intended to host a detachable attribute (e.g., scepter or rosary) or the result of an ancient contemporaneous restoration.
Detailed description of the work:
Refined and imposing devotional sculpture in solid wood depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. The small Jesus is portrayed blessing with his right hand, while his left holds the globe, the ancient symbol of divine sovereignty over the world.
The work is entirely hand-carved in the round from a single block of wood. Of great expressive charm are the faces and the flowing drapery of the garments, which still preserves precious fragments of the original blue pigment and red, along with the antique leaf gilding. The statue rests on a circular base integrated into the same block. A piece of high decorative and collecting value, ideal for antiques and interiors of high period.
The object will be professionally packed and protected to ensure safe shipping.
Tracked and insured shipping.
