Napoletan terracotta polychrome angel figure with glass eyes and silk dress – 18th century (attributed)
Fascinating and rare angelic figure from the Neapolitan sphere, attributable to the refined sculptural and presepe tradition of the 18th century, expression of the extraordinary artistic sensibility developed in Naples during the Baroque age.
Particularly evocative is the terracotta polychrome face, characterized by delicate features, rosy cheeks, finely painted lips and deep glass eyes that give the figure an intense and contemplative expression. The hairstyle, modeled in soft wavy locks, completes the elegant physiognomy.
The figure wears a long robe in antique gold-colored silk, with wide sleeves, a sash at the waist and rich trimmings with gold metallic threads, elements that attest to the scenographic taste typical of Neapolitan devotional tradition. The figure, in terms of composition and arm posture, appears originally conceived as an angel suspended in flight, in line with the scenographic tradition of Neapolitan sacred sculpture of the 18th century. The stance and the flowing movement of the robes suggest an aerial placement, plausibly inside a devotional apparatus or a sacred composition. The current marble base with a carved vertical groove edge, which further enhances the composition, serves as an exhibition support, while the figure retains the charm and dynamism of its original conception.
