Description from the seller
Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori – Neapolitan School, 19th century
Interesting and refined devotional oil on canvas, attributable to the Neapolitan school of painting in the 19th century, depicting Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori (1696–1787), bishop, theologian and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a central figure of Catholic spirituality and Neapolitan religious tradition.
The work presents a gathered, intimate composition, characterized by a notable chromatic balance and particular attention to the psychological rendering of the Saint.
Saint Alphonsus is portrayed in half-length, with his head slightly bowed and his gaze directed toward a small image of the Virgin Mary placed on a table covered by a drape. In his hand he holds a rosary, while in the background a crucifix appears, elements that recall his deep spirituality and special Marian devotion.
Of particular artistic merit are the delicate modeling of the face, the expressiveness of the gaze, the softness of the flesh tones, and the meticulous rendering of the ecclesiastical vestments, with the refined lace of the rochet, the pectoral cross, and the episcopal ring.
The luminous golden halo emerges from a dark background, giving depth to the composition and enhancing the contemplative intensity of the figure.
The work fits within the tradition of 19th-century sacred portraiture, particularly widespread in southern Italy, where the image of Saint Alphonsus occupied a privileged place in popular devotion and ecclesiastical settings.
On the back there is an ancient handwritten inscription, apparently referring to the depicted subject and accompanied by a date, an element of documentary interest to be explored further.
Conservation conditions: overall excellent for its age. Canvas well stretched on a robust expandable wooden frame, with small signs of time, physiological craquelure, and limited superficial paint losses, visible in the photographs. The work retains a pleasant antique appearance.
Dimensions: 58.5 × 46.5 × 2.5 cm.
On the occasion of this exclusive Catawiki auction, the work will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Ankerior, prepared specifically for the event, complete with photographic documentation, historical-artistic description, and identifying characteristics of the painting.
Interior design notes: a painting of particular charm, ideal to embellish a classical study, a library, a representative space, or a historic home. The sobriety of the palette and the expressive intensity make it interesting even in a contemporary interior, creating an elegant contrast between ancient sacred art and modern design. Especially suitable for collectors of religious painting and Alfonsian iconography.
The photographs are an integral part of the description and faithfully document the condition of the work.
Shipping with professional, careful packaging, carried out according to the handling and protection procedures for works of art, thanks to our specialized Art Logistics certification.
