Place: Antwerp
Date: 1725
Technique: Copperplate engraving, executed with aquatint and burin, with period hand coloring at the borders
Support: Watermarked paper
Dimensions: Sheet 19 × 20 cm; impression 17.5 × 14.5 cm
Composition: One sheet with a central editorial fold
Description
Geographic map of the province of Overijssel, in the eastern Netherlands, with the neighboring areas of Friesland, Drenthe, and the adjacent German regions. The network of waterways, settlements, and territorial subdivisions is rendered with a dense engraved pattern; the hand coloring emphasizes the borders.
In the lower left corner, the title Over-Yssel appears in a figurative cartouche with coat of arms, scale, and ornamental motifs. A compass rose occupies the left margin of the map. The whole combines geographic function with a decorative apparatus characteristic of early 18th-century Flemish cartography.
Historical-artistic note
The map bears in the cartouche the signature «I. Peeters» and, beneath the scale, Harrewijn’s signature as engraver. The Antwerp publication in 1725 by Juan Bautista Verdussen places the sheet within the cartographic production intended to describe, in a compact format, the provinces of the Netherlands.
Condition Report
Vertical central fold, visible also on the reverse, with slight browning along the fold line. Sporadic foxing and minor signs of age, especially at the margins. Hand coloring at the borders. Reverse: white.
