Description from the seller
Logbook and photos. Ocean liner Pei Ho. Messageries maritimes. 1888.
Interesting collection of documents about the Messageries maritimes steamship, the PEI HO, a 117-meter ship assigned to the Orient service via the Suez Canal, which carried 300 passengers. The documents offered come from the ship's doctor and date from 1888. They are:
• 2 photos mounted on cardboard representing the ship in port. One shows the caulking of the ship. They measure 24 cm by 17 cm and are mounted on a cardboard 31 cm by 24 cm. One of the two is the reverse of the other; the caulking photo is better contrasted.
• The handwritten logbook of the doctor of Cliou is called the journal of cures and bears the mention of the Compagnie des Messageries maritimes. It contains 100 pages preceded by a printed title page. Begun on 13 December 1888 and completed on 22 March 1889. Entirely handwritten, it records day by day the names of the patients seen by the doctor, their rank or position aboard, the nature of the disease, the causes, the symptoms, the duration, the outcome and the treatments of their illness, enriched with a few observations. One discovers a typology of the most common diseases as well as the details of the treatments proposed by the doctor, leading to a few deaths.
Ensemble in bon état d'usage, écriture lisible. Document rare which informs us both about long voyages at the end of the 19th century and about medicine at sea at that time.
