Black opals, like their differently colored counterparts, occur as rounded to knobbly masses with no identifiable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the cutting/polishing of these stones. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which shows itself in intense rainbow flashes. Additionally, the base rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside the mineral.
