Description from the seller
Antique Victorian Oak Writing Slope / Writing Box – circa 1880–1900 - 7,1 Kg
In excellent condition – No reserve
A beautiful antique oak writing slope dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900, from the Late Victorian period. Crafted from solid oak with thick, heavy wooden boards, this substantial piece showcases striking natural grain patterns in warm honey-brown tones.
The characteristic sloping lid opens to reveal a spacious wooden storage compartment, originally intended for keeping letters, writing paper and personal correspondence. The angled writing surface features a raised front lip to prevent papers from slipping. Traditional finger-jointed corners, original metal hinges, a brass-coloured escutcheon and an antique key add to its authentic period character.
Writing slopes were popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, serving as practical portable writing desks in homes and offices. Before the widespread use of typewriters and modern office equipment, they provided an elegant and convenient space for handwritten correspondence while keeping personal documents safely stored away.
