Description from the seller
Italian Renaissance Revival Carved Walnut Set — Cassapanca and Two Throne Chairs, 19th Century
An ensemble with a striking decorative presence, comprising a high-backed cassapanca storage bench and two matching throne chairs. The set reflects the nineteenth-century taste for Renaissance traditions through richly carved walnut and a repertoire of Venetian-inspired ornament.
The backrests feature carved panels decorated with foliage, scrollwork and relief ornament, crowned by shaped crest rails. The winged lion holding a book, a reference to the iconography of Saint Mark and the city of Venice, forms the figurative centrepiece of the decoration.
On the cassapanca, armrests supported by turned elements and a front framed by ornamental bands complete a composition of architectural character. The seat lifts to reveal a spacious storage compartment.
The two throne chairs echo the decorative language of the cassapanca, with tall backrests and carved details extending along the uprights and front stretchers. The warm walnut tones and age-developed patina lend depth to the carving.
The presence of all three matching pieces makes this ensemble particularly appealing for a formal entrance hall, reception room, library or study. A set capable of bringing character to historic interiors and carefully considered furnishing projects, with appeal for collectors, antique dealers, architects and interior designers.
