Olympus EES-2, a near mint D-mount 35mm half-frame compact camera, tested and working, with a selenium-powered light meter, fixed 30mm f/2.8 lens, and capable of 72 exposures from a 36-exposure roll.
Description from the seller
The Olympus Pen EES-2 is an iconic half-frame 35mm compact camera produced between 1968 and 1971. Designed by the legendary Yoshihisa Maitani, it packs premium optics into a highly pocketable form factor.
* Double the Photos (Half-Frame): It splits a standard 35mm negative in half vertically (18x24mm). This allows you to get 72 exposures out of a standard 36-exposure film roll, making analog shooting highly economical.
* Native Portrait Orientation: When holding the camera normally, you look and shoot in a vertical portrait layout. You simply turn the camera sideways for landscape shots.
* Battery-Free Operation: A prominent ring of selenium cells around the lens powers the automatic light meter. It generates its own energy, so the camera never requires batteries.
Technical Specifications
* Lens: A sharp, fixed D.Zuiko 30mm f/2.8 lens (equivalent to roughly a 43mm standard lens on full-frame).
* Focusing: Easy 4-zone focus system with icons on the lens ring: Close-up/Portrait (1m), Couples (1.5m), Group (3m), and Landscape (∞).
Fully automatic shutter priority (trap-needle system) where the camera chooses between 1/40s or 1/200s and the corresponding aperture (f/2.8 to f/22).
Film sensitivity: Manually adjustable from ISO/ASA 25 to 400.
Equipped with a built-in hot shoe
The Olympus Pen EES-2 weighs about 370 gram.
The camera is primarily constructed from metal (mostly steel and aluminum), which was standard for the durable Japanese camera design of the 1960s and 1970s.
In good vintage condition with minor signs of prior use consistent with its age (see photos for exact cosmetic details).
Light meter is still working! The famous selenium cell ring around the lens reacts accurately to light without needing any batteries.
Light seals need replacing.
Shutter fires smoothly and the 4zone focusing ring turns smoothly. Film advance mechanism operates perfectly.
The red flag safeguard is still working (when there is insufficient light, the iconic red warning flag pops up in the viewfinder and locks the shutter to prevent wasted exposures).
