Description from the seller
Celebre archaeological view of the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella along the Via Appia Antica in Rome, enriched in the foreground with pastoral genre scenes ("macchiette" with shepherds, goats and a dog).
• Bilingual text at the center: "View of the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, called Capo di Bove, erected by Crassus, her husband, to preserve her ashes" / "Vüe du Tombeau de Cecile Metella dit Capo di Bove erigé par Crassus son Mari pour renfermer ses cendres"
• Publisher at the center: "In Roma presso Agapito Franzetti al Corso" / "A Rome chez Agapite Franzetti al Corso"
• The sheet presents a sound surface, with crisp and contrasted ink. The four large outer editorial margins beyond the plate line are completely intact and free from tears or losses. A slight and natural diagonal crease appears on the left margin and there is a minimal waviness of the paper support consistent with the period.
• Back: The paper shows widespread small spots of dark bloom (foxing) and minimal fiber porosity due to time. The support remains solid, not thinned, and free of restorations or invasive adhesive interventions.”
