Description from the seller
Vintage West German Brutalist Fat Lava Ceramic Table Lamp by Walter Gerhards, 1960s–1970s
A spectacular vintage West German ceramic table lamp attributed to Walter Gerhards, dating from the 1960s–1970s. This sculptural statement piece is an outstanding example of the bold, experimental design associated with the West German pottery movement.
The impressive brutalist silhouette features a striking arrangement of sculptural loop handles, a monumental cylindrical base and numerous circular cut-outs. Finished in a rich, glossy orange-brown glaze with darker reddish-brown accents and a naturally aged crackle effect, the lamp has a powerful architectural presence.
The openwork ceramic base is designed to allow light to shine through its circular perforations, creating a warm, atmospheric glow. The lamp features a dual-lighting arrangement, with a bulb holder at the top and a second light source inside the ceramic base. This combination of sculptural form and functional lighting makes it a true eye-catcher.
The lamp is offered without a lampshade, allowing the new owner to select a shade that complements their personal taste and interior. Its unusual ceramic base also works beautifully as a standalone decorative object.
A substantial and highly decorative vintage piece, ideal for an eclectic interior, a designer living room or a collection of exceptional West German pottery.
