Description from the seller
A varied collection of Greek EUROPA / CEPT stamps from 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1986, featuring sculpture, painting, traditional handicrafts, architecture, postal history, celebrated cultural figures and nature conservation.
The lot includes numerous blocks of four and larger multiples, strips, pairs and singles, many with original sheet margins and corner positions, together with 15 original EUROPA 1986 booklets.
All stamps are MNH (Mint Never Hinged), with original gum and no hinge marks.
The following issues are represented:
• 1974 – Sculpture: ancient Greek sculptures in distinctive blue, red and yellow designs, including the Harpist of Keros and the Charioteer of Delphi.
• 1975 – Painting: works by the Greek folk painter Theophilos, including a vase of flowers and “Erotokritos and Aretousa”.
• 1976 – Traditional Handicrafts: colourful Greek pottery, including jugs and pitchers, and a circular design featuring a plate decorated with three fish.
• 1978 – Monuments: the Church of Hagia Sophia in Thessaloniki and the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens.
• 1979 – Postal History: historical Greek postmen with a bicycle and on horseback, represented in singles, pairs and larger multiples.
• 1980 – Famous Personalities: Giorgos Seferis, the Nobel Prize-winning poet, on the 8-drachma stamp, and Maria Callas, the celebrated soprano, on the 14-drachma stamp. Both designs appear in blocks and multiples, including marginal and corner pieces, as well as pairs and singles.
• 1986 – Nature Conservation: the 35-drachma design showing hands sheltering a tree and the 110-drachma design showing hands protecting a wetland scene. Included are three large marginal blocks of 16 stamps, each containing eight examples of each denomination, with CEPT labels along the sides.
Also included are 15 original illustrated EUROPA 1986 booklets, each with a face value of 290 drachmas and containing four stamps: two of 35 drachmas and two of 110 drachmas.
A varied selection for collectors of Greece and EUROPA / CEPT, with additional thematic interest in art, opera, literature, postal history and nature conservation.
Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact contents and condition. Overview images and close-up photographs show the same material and do not represent additional items.
