Description from the seller
LOTTO 1 (Upper Table)
• Title on the sheet: MVESUVIO
• Editorial details: Presents at the top left an elegant heraldic cartouche with a partially legible dedication: «All'Ill.mo Sig.re... D. Dom.o Fiorillo...». At the bottom left bears the engraver's monogram "C.de S. f." (Francesco Cassiano de Silva fecit).
• Historical provenance: From the monumental work of Giovanni Battista Pacichelli, «Il Regno di Napoli in prospettiva», published in Naples in 1703 by Domenico Antonio Parrino and Michele Luigi Muzio.
• Description: Rare and evocative bird’s-eye view of the volcano showing the lava flows branching toward coastal towns up to the sea.
• Condition: Good/Acceptable. Edges trimmed close to the copperplate’s line of run-out.
LOTTO 2 (Central Plate)
• Title on the sheet: Le Mont Vesuve comme il etoit en 1631.
• Editorial details: Carries the designation of placement at the top right: «pag. 250». At the bottom features a three-entry numbered legend in French: 1. Lieu ou Pline fut etoufé. 2. Torre de l'Greco. 3. Pont la Nuntiata.
• Historical provenance: French-language variant (intended for European Grand Tour travelers) derived from the iconographic design created for Domenico Antonio Parrino’s guides (late 17th century).
• Description: The scene depicts the dramatic eruption of 1631. In the foreground there is a lively and dramatic scene of citizens, riders, and carriages fleeing near the historic Ponte della Maddalena (indicated as Pont la Nuntiata). In the background, the volcano generates a colossal eruptive column.
• Condition: Excellent. Clean paper with jagged edges at the margins (paper fibers visible), very good inking and sharpness of details.
LOTTO 3 (Lower Plate)
• Title on the sheet: Le Mont Vesuve comme il etoit en 1631.
• Editorial details: Variant of the previous plate, bearing at the top right the editorial inscription: «Tom. 5. Pag. 62.» . Same legend at the bottom.
• Historical provenance: Taken from a different edition (likely a multi-volume eighteenth-century historical or encyclopedic work) based on Parrino’s matrices.
• Description: Mirrored, contemporary replica of the same iconographic scheme as Lot 2 (eruption of 1631, escape onto the bridge).
• Condition: Good. Paper support uniformly browned (amber patina of time).
