An antique gilt leather-bound writing set comprising a sloped-lid box and an accompanying writing tray, dating to circa 1900, with French origin, excellent condition with only minor wear, and dimensions about 25.5 × 24.5 × 23.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Remarkable writing ensemble consisting of an inclined-lid box and a matching inkwell/desk lid? No, better keep faithful: an inclined-lid writing casket and a matching writing surface.
The different pieces are veneered in brown leather on a fine wooden core, with a rich gold decoration of scrollwork, rosettes, friezes and geometric frames. The repetition of the ornaments on the elements forms a particularly harmonious ensemble.
The surface features two side boxes, a central removable glass inkwell, and a pen-rest decorated in the same spirit. A glass plate is integrated into the surface, held under its borders. The box is equipped with a decorative metal lock with key.
Dimensions communicated
Closed casket: approximately 25.5 × 24.5 × 23.5 cm (dimensions to be verified before publication).
State and attribution
Very good apparent condition and visually homogeneous overall. The lock and key are reported as functional. A direct verification of the ensemble, its accessories and any signs of wear is recommended.
Proposed dating: 19th century, subject to material examination; workshop and country of origin not identified.
