Green moss agate (chalcedony variety) with mossy green inclusions, named Green Moss Nautiloid Cthulhu – Spirale der Zeit, Versunkene Welten, in the form of a carved skull, originating from India.
Description from the seller
“That is not dead which can eternally lie, and in strange aeons even death may die.” This couplet is cited by H. P. Lovecraft in The Call of Cthulhu from the forbidden Necronomicon, first printed in 1928. In the story it stands for Cthulhu, who lies deep in the South Pacific in the sunken city of R’lyeh, not dead but dreaming, waiting for the moment when the stars will be right again.
This skull seems to have risen from that depth. Over the skullcap and temples winds a ribbed housing, striated like the shell of a nautiloid, whose spiral coils at the side as if the house of a deep-sea creature were growing directly out of the bone. On the jaw margins lie scales. Through all of it runs the green of moss-agate in flakes and veils, across several semi-transparent planes, merging with one another as if one looked through seawater at a growing seafloor. In many places the stone opens into small geodes and reveals inner crystal worlds, sparkling grottos that have not seen light until the inscriber opened them. Every rib, every twist, every chamber boundary is worked with exceptional care.
Nautiloids have swum the seas for about 500 million years. They have survived several mass extinctions, and their descendants, the pearl boats, live to this day in the Indo-Pacific. The moss in this stone is not vegetation, but green hornblende or chlorite that the chalcedony wrapped around as it grew, and which it held forever. That which can lie so long is not dead.
