The Sony TC-252W is a classic, portable 4-track stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder introduced by Sony at the end of the 1960s (circa 1968-1972). The addition "W" stands for "Wood cabinet", meaning that this specific model is finished with a luxury wooden casing instead of the standard vinyl/plastic finish of the regular TC-252.
The unit was very popular at the time because it was a complete all-in-one audio system. Thanks to the built-in amplifier and the detachable speakers (which can be clicked onto the recorder like a lid), you could listen to music directly without needing an external receiver.

• Heads: Equipped with 2 heads (1x erase, 1x record/play).
• Tape speeds: Supports three speeds: 4.75 cm/s (1 7/8 ips), 9.5 cm/s (3 3/4 ips) and 19 cm/s (7 1/2 ips).
• Maximum reel size: Suitable for reels up to 7 inches (about 18 cm).
• Output power: 4 Watts per channel via the built-in amplifier.
• Weight: About 13.5 kg.

• Sound-on-Sound (SOS): Allows transferring audio from one channel to the other while adding a new sound source (ideal for early forms of multi-tracking).
