Trilobite fossil Asaphellus sp. from the Fezouata Formation, Ordovician (Early Tremadocian ca. 480 million years ago), preserved in the original shale matrix with natural red‑oxide coloration and an exoskeleton about 90% complete; specimen is natural and conserved.
Description from the seller
Trilobite fossil Asaphellus sp. on original matrix - Fezouata Formation.
Species: Asaphellus sp. / Asaphellus
Family: Asaphidae
Locality: Fezouata Formation, Jbel Tijarfaïouine, near Zagora, Anti-Atlas, Morocco
Geological age: Early Ordovician, Tremadocian (Upper), ca. 480 million years
Formation: Fezouata Shale - Konservat-Lagerstätte of the Ordovician
Description:
Complete and natural specimen of Asaphellus 7 cm in length including matrix, preserved in dorsal view on the original matrix in a wedge. Features a large, smooth, semicircular cephalon, a thorax with 8 articulating segments, and a short pygidium, diagnostic characteristics of the genus. Preserves the original exoskeleton with natural red-oxide/orange intense coloration due to impregnation by iron oxides, typical and highly sought after from Fezouata preservation. Trilobation well defined with a raised central rachis and visible axial furrows.
Original beige-brown olive-gray oily shale matrix of fine grain, with a natural wedge-shaped triangular fracture, not cut artificially. Fine mechanical preparation, with no reconstruction using resin or paint. Light conservation varnish to protect and highlight the natural color.
Conservation status:
Very good. Complete, without breaks, with the exoskeleton present at ~90%. Slight natural wear on the edge of the cephalon. 100% natural.
