Ivan IV Vasilyevich ‘the Terrible’ (1547–1584 AD) was the first ruler formally crowned Tsar of Russia. He transformed the expanding Muscovite state into a centralized tsardom and conquered Kazan and Astrakhan, extending Russian power to the Volga and Caspian. His later reign was marked by the brutal Oprichnina and the costly Livonian War, which severely weakened the realm.
