Matthias II (1608–1619) gained the Hungarian crown after challenging his brother Rudolf II, securing support through concessions to the nobility and Protestants. His reign balanced Habsburg ambitions with Hungary’s political and religious freedoms. Silver denárs bearing the Madonna, patroness of Hungary, continued a longstanding monetary tradition as tensions across Central Europe grew into the Thirty Years’ War.
