Description from the seller

Academic plaster model – Foot study inspired by Ebe by Antonio Canova – Neoclassicism

Type: teaching model / plaster casting
Subject: detailed study of the foot and the lower portion of the limb
Iconographic reference: Ebe by Antonio Canova
Material: modeling and casting plaster
Context: academic, instructional, study of classical and neoclassical sculpture
Height: about 30 cm
Weight: about 1.8 kg
Conditions: good/excellent, with normal irregularities and small superficial abrasions inherent to the working and handling of plaster.

Description
Interesting academic plaster model depicting a human foot with strong plastic rendering, complete with the lower portion of the leg and set on a solid circular integrated base.
The artifact belongs to the tradition of teaching plasters used in the study of sculpture, in which the anatomical detail was isolated from the context of the full figure to allow the student to analyze proportions, articulation, volumetric relationships, structure and surface treatment separately.
The modelling presents a clearly classicist and neoclassical setting, characterized by the pursuit of balance of masses, simplification of surfaces and the idealized definition of the shapes of the foot and ankle.
The model is particularly interesting for its iconographic relation with the Canova’s Ebe, a famous example of the artist’s neoclassical search for the human body and the grace of form. The original Ebe was conceived by Canova in plaster and represents one of the most significant cases of his sculptural methodology: the plaster model indeed represented a fundamental stage of the process leading to the marble version.
The present specimen should therefore be interpreted as an academic model inspired or derived from the Canova repertoire, and not as an original model personally created by Antonio Canova. In the absence of provenance documentation, signature, plaster mass stamp or other attestation, it would not be correct to attribute it directly to the artist’s workshop.
Particularly significant is the fact that the subject has been isolated in the only anatomico-sculptural portion useful for study. This mode is coherent with the teaching tradition of plaster shops and academies, where casts allowed students to practice observing and reproducing the details of ancient and modern sculpture.
The Canova tradition itself documents the importance of plaster as a technical and didactic phase of sculptural production. The Canova Museum, for example, describes the realization of plaster models and the possibility of deriving multiple specimens from the same shape.

Technical characteristics
The piece is characterized by:
- three-dimensional, full-round modeling;
- uniformly white surface, typical of instructional plaster;
- idealized rendering of anatomy;
- attention to the volumetric transition between leg, ankle and foot;
- individual definition of the toes;
- circular base intended for stabilization and display;
- evident didactic-academic vocation.
The surface shows minor marks, porosity, irregularities and abrasions, compatible with the nature of the material and with artisanal plaster work. From the available photographs, no elements are observed that would compromise the overall legibility of the model.

Collecting interest
The artifact may be particularly interesting for collectors of:
academic plaster casts · sculptural casts · neoclassicism · Antonio Canova · plaster museums (gipsoteca) · history of art education · educational models for sculptors · artistic anatomy · classical sculpture.
It is also a decorative object with strong museum-like character, particularly suitable for study rooms, studios, libraries, spaces dedicated to art and collections of plaster casts.
