Monumental French gilded mirror dating from ca. 1885–1900, in antique Art Nouveau–influenced style, with a carved gilt wood frame featuring two swans among water lilies, measuring 120 cm wide by 130 cm high and 10 cm deep, with original 19th‑century mirror glass and mercury backing.
Description from the seller
An exceptionally decorative and monumental French mirror from the end of the 19th century, executed in richly carved and gilded wood. A particularly fine example of the refined French decorative art from the late Napoleon III tradition, in which the first influences of Art Nouveau are visible.
The impressive frame is crowned by a splendid, deeply carved composition of two elegant swans, surrounded by graceful reeds, water lilies and lush water plants.
The swans seem to move gracefully through the water, while the richly worked vegetation gives the composition a particularly lively and romantic character. The refined woodcarving, with its pronounced relief and flowing lines, creates a remarkable sense of depth and movement.
The underside of the frame is adorned with an imposing shell motif, combined with graceful volutes and elaborately carved leaf ornaments. The corners are also provided with beautifully carved botanical decorations, which harmoniously frame the elegant composition.
The mirror is equipped with its original 19th-century mirror glass with mercury silvering, framed by refined profiled decorative moldings. The authentic mirror glass has retained its characteristic historic appearance and contributes to the special charm of this antique object.
The combination of romantic natural symbolism, richly gilded woodcarving and monumental proportions reflects the exceptional decorative craftsmanship of the French ateliers of this period.
With its impressive width of 120 cm and height of 130 cm, this mirror forms a particularly stylish focal point in a classic, eclectic or luxurious interior.
An imposing and characterful decorative object in which French elegance, refined craftsmanship and the romantic language of form of the late 19th century come together in harmonious fashion.
