Description from the seller
Green-glazed nomadic horseman gourd (bianhu) in earthenware, Tang Dynasty (618–907), China
Monochrome green-glazed earthenware
This piece evokes a nomadic horseman’s gourd, sculpted with details imitating leather
The suspension handles (ears): you can observe small perforated lugs on the edges. They were used to pass leather straps or cords to suspend the bottle on the horse’s flank or at the rider’s belt.
Lead-green emerald glaze (obtained with copper oxide).
The slightly patinated, iridescent, earthy appearance of the surface is due to the natural chemical alteration of the glaze lead after centuries buried in a tomb.
This piece is a magnificent testimony to the cultural synthesis inherent in Tang art, blending utilitarian leather-inspired nomadic forms with the mastery of Chinese ceramics, revealing the rise of trade that flourished during the Tang Dynasty.
Dimensions: 20 x 18 x 7.5 cm
Small chips at the neck
No restorations have been made, (tested by UV light and thermoluminescence)
Provenance: - Private collection in the south of France
An authenticity certificate will be issued to the buyer.
Taxes and customs duties are included in the shipping costs for international shipments
Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller. No further tests, such as TL testing, lapidary tests, pigment analysis or radiography scans, have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
