Alexius III seized the throne in 1195 by deposing and blinding his brother Isaac II. His reign faced provincial rebellions and growing Bulgarian power as imperial authority weakened. In 1203, the Fourth Crusade reached Constantinople to support Isaac’s son, the future Alexius IV. Alexius III fled the capital, allowing his brother’s restoration and leaving a succession crisis that preceded the crusaders’ sack of the city in 1204.
