Voxson Tanga – Rodolfo Bonetto – Italian Design Radio – circa 1970

A compact and highly architectural object, the Voxson Tanga is a distinctive example of Italian industrial design from the early 1970s.

Designed by Rodolfo Bonetto around 1970, the Tanga represents a radical departure from the conventional appearance of domestic radios, adopting instead a sculptural, geometric and strongly architectural form.

The design is built around an almost perfect cubic volume measuring approximately 12.5 × 12.5 × 12.5 cm. Its clean geometry is interrupted by angled surfaces integrating the controls and functional elements. The green front section appears almost inserted into the cream-coloured body, creating a strong visual contrast and giving the radio its unmistakable character.

The rear ventilation grille is carefully integrated into the overall design, while the telescopic antenna adds a technical and dynamic element to the composition.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Tanga concept is its unusual dual-purpose design. The radio unit was originally conceived in connection with automotive use, while the distinctive cubic housing allowed it to be used comfortably as a domestic radio. This approach perfectly reflects the experimentation of the period, when portability, modularity and versatility became increasingly important themes in industrial design.

Rather than being simply classified as a Space Age object, the Tanga is more accurately placed within early 1970s Italian industrial design, where functionality, technological experimentation and sculptural form were closely combined.

The casing retains its original factory colour. No repainting or retrobright treatment has been applied, preserving the authentic appearance and natural ageing of the original materials.
