Alexander Jannaeus was a Hasmonean king and high priest who greatly expanded Judaea through sustained military campaigns. His reign brought control over much of the coastal plain, Galilee and territories east of the Jordan, but was also marked by fierce internal conflict with his opponents in Jerusalem. Despite civil unrest, his rule represented the territorial height of the Hasmonean Kingdom.
