Description from the seller
Bronze ring with engraved disc – 10th–15th century AD
A bronze ring with a narrow hoop and a raised circular disc forming the bezel. Its surface carries a composition of fine intersecting lines and small dotted marks, partly softened by wear. Oblique incisions on the shoulders accompany the transition from hoop to head. Brown, green and yellowish tones cover the surface, with deposits in the recesses and small irregularities along the edges. The contrast between the simple hoop and the linear decoration distinguishes this piece. Viewed from the side, the disc forms a distinct upper platform above the opening of the hoop. Its broad face provides the principal decorative field, while the incisions on the shoulders lead the eye towards it. The surviving ornament is linear rather than deeply sculptural, and differences in surface colour make some strokes easier to distinguish than others. The worn circumference and uneven deposits remain part of the visible condition of the piece.
Material: Bronze
Dimensions: 2.6 x 2.2 cm
Weight: 4.52 gr
Provenance: Acquired in Germany from an auction house, previously from a personal collection.
