Description from the seller
Antique wooden Crucifix, finely carved and polychromed, on a shield-shaped velvet-supported base – Mid 19th Century
Refined and elegant antique crucifix dating from the mid-19th century, characterized by a sculpture of Christ finely carved in wood and enriched with original polychromy. The body of Jesus is rendered with notable anatomical sensitivity and expressive pathos: the face, turned toward the right shoulder and encircled by the crown of thorns, emphasizes the details of the facial features and the beard. The loincloth (perizonium) exhibits soft, well-sculpted drapery. The polychromy, with flesh tones and painted blood details (wounds on the hands, the side, and the feet), reflects the typical devotional tradition of the era.
Christ is mounted on a shield-shaped plaque/support, covered in an elegant burgundy-red/purple velvet, which creates a vivid color contrast and highlights the sculptural forms. At the top there is the original/period metal ring for wall mounting.
Good overall condition for its age. It shows the natural patina of time, small signs of wear, and minor chips/missing areas in the polychromy. The photos are an integral part of the description. The object will be packed with extreme care and shipped via traceable express courier.
