Three-rail DC
Front signals switch with direction of travel
2 axles driven
Cover not properly secured
In 1963 DB Krupp AG commissioned the development of a V-160 variant with electric train heating, which would carry the type designation V 162. Krupp then delivered in 1965 the two prototypes V 162 001 and V 162 002, which in 1966 were reinforced by the third prototype V 162 003.
The three locomotives had a 16-cylinder 16V652 TB10 engine built by MTU with a power of 1,427 kilowatts (1,940 hp). The power of the main engine must be fully available for traction. Because Krupp in the mid-1960s did not have a more powerful engine for the V 162, an auxiliary motor had to be installed to operate the heating generator for electric train heating. This, in turn, required a longer locomotive body than the V 160 with a total length over buffers of 16.4 meters.
