Gouache on cotton canvas, a 1950s Nepalese-Tibetan folk art thangka titled Grote Tibetaans-Nepalese thangka, leven van Boeddha Shakyamuni, unsigned and in good condition, depicting Shakyamuni Buddha on a lotus throne with disciples and scenes from his life, measuring 80 cm by 55 cm.
Description from the seller
A large, hand-painted thangka on cotton canvas in the Nepalese or Tibetan style. In the center sits Buddha Shakyamuni on a lotus throne. He touches the earth with his right hand and holds a bowl in his left hand. On either side stands a pupil.
Around them are many small scenes depicting episodes from the life of the Buddha, with palaces, pagodas, temples, mountains, a waterfall, trees and clouds. Among other things, the queen's dream with the white elephant can be recognized, as well as elephants, a white horse and at the bottom the reclining Buddha. At the top there are rows of Buddhas, and above them a blue figure embracing a partner. This is a traditional Buddhist portrayal of the union of wisdom and compassion and has no erotic meaning.
The details are very finely worked, with gold outlines and gilded accents in clothing, trees, roofs and halos. The canvas has been examined with a loupe and is not printed: there are no grid dots, but brushwork and the texture of the fabric are visible.
Details
Technique: pigments/paint with gilded details on cotton canvas (likely produced in the traditional manner).
Dimensions: 56 × 79 cm.
Origin/period: probably Nepal, 20th century. Artist unknown, unsigned (as far as visible).
Back: pencil notes in Devanagari numerals (likely price or workshop notes) and a fragment of a red lacquer seal/stamp, unreadable.
Mounting: the canvas is mounted on a support with a brown fabric edge. The work is not framed; the glass from a previous frame is not included.
Condition
Good condition as far as visible. No cracks or loss of paint on the front. Light signs of wear at the edge, appropriate to age. See the photos. Sold in the condition it is in.
